We at the Rocca Sisters Team are very proud to call the City of Burlington home, and as such we’re very excited about the upcoming expansion of the Joseph Brant Museum, opening Summer 2019.

The current Joseph Brant Museum is a 1937 replica of the house of Joseph Brant, Thayendanegea, a Mohawk warrior, leader of the Six Nations, a Christian missionary, a British military officer, Freemason, and Burlington’s first citizen.

The necessity for the expansion of the Museum has been identified as a need since 1978, but the timing has never been right. Over 30 years later, the dream of expansion will become a reality with the transformation of the Joseph Brant Museum into Burlington’s Community Museum and Heritage Centre.

The 17,000 square foot expansion includes four exhibit halls, two multi-purpose rooms, lobby, shop, resource centre and storage for over 25,000 artifacts and historical treasures. The current 5,000 square foot Joseph Brant Museum will undergo a renovation that will provide space for gallery displays, interactive programming and community outreach. The ‘Brant House’ will be a beacon recognizing Burlington’s rich Aboriginal heritage.

The brand new and modern Community Museum and Heritage Centre was designed by Chamberlain Architects Ltd., and will be built into the grassy area under the current Museum, reflecting the architectural integrity of the current Brant House. The Joseph Brant Museum and the new Community Museum and Heritage Centre will expand heritage programming opportunities in Burlington’s downtown waterfront precinct, making it an exciting and ever-changing waterfront destination for residents, citizens and tourists alike.
