Rocca Sisters Tip of the Week: Three Apps to Help You Go Green

As you probably already know, April is Earth Month and at the Rocca Sisters Team, we have been making changes, both big and small, to help reduce our carbon footprint for the month of April and beyond! To finish up the month, we wanted to share a few apps you can download today to help you achieve a more green and environmentally-conscious lifestyle. Go green with these three great apps:
In today’s social media driven world, there is very little excuse to trash our household goods simply because we no longer want them, causing perfectly good items to rot in landfills. This is where Freecycle+Trash Nothing comes in! This free app connects you with members of your community who might be interested in your unwanted things and are willing to pick them up from your porch or curb side. Simply post an unwanted item, connect with a person in your area, and watch that item disappear to a loving home. You can also browse other people’s listings and grab some free goodies instead of buying them, saving you money and reducing your carbon footprint by repurposing something that already exists instead of buying new. With this app, not only is one person’s trash is another’s treasure, but it is also a great gift to the environment!
It is not always easy to make the best and most informed choices when making purchases but GoodGuide, a free app, can help! A helpful resource for those of us who want to make socially-conscious choices, GoodGuide rates products such as personal care, household, and baby products and assigns them a score out of ten based on how good they are for your health, the environment, and how they impact communities around the world. With all of this knowledge at the tip of your fingers, you can make smarter, greener, and kinder choices in the way you shop!
A major way to reduce your carbon footprint is to carpool, take public transit, or walk instead of using your car. The Walk Score app is great when you are looking for a new neighbourhood to call home, getting to know your community, or when vacationing and choosing a hotel. When you open the app and search a location, it will score the address from 1 – 100, designating it as “car dependent” for a lower score, “somewhat walkable” for mid-range score, or “walker’s paradise” for a high score. The list icon at the bottom of the home screen will show you nearby amenities, which will help you discover more about an area in which you might be interested. It goes without saying that choosing an area where you can ditch your gas-guzzling car and walk is a great way to live greener!
