For Canadians sustainable household consumption is important because the ecological footprint we have is much larger than what the Earth can sustain in the long term.

Here are four easy changes you can make at home that will have you conserving the environment in a big way:

1. Get rid of old energy guzzling appliances. If your refrigerator or freezer is 20 years or older it is creating a burden on energy supply. According to the Ontario Power Authority getting rid of an old freezer or refrigerator can also save you about $125 on your energy bill.

2. Pay attention to temperature settings. Heating and cooling costs can account to half our home’s energy costs. Look at getting yourself a programmable thermostat which can help you control temperature remotely via the internet and an energy display can show you exactly how much energy your home is using at any given time. Peaksaver PLUS is one such device that is being offered by many local utility distribution companies in Ontario for free.

3. Watch your water use. Saving water can be as simple as turning the tap off when brushing your teeth.

4. Reduce plastic use. Using reusable bags at home and for shopping is one of the key ways to avoid increasing greenhouse gas emissions.
