How to Save on Heating Costs this Winter: 5 Money-Saving Tips for Staying Warm This Winter
We have been suffering through an especially cold and dreary winter, and many of us are seeing the strain on our household budgets as we attempt to heat our houses during each cold snap. Fortunately, we have some simple and affordable tips to help you keep your wallet happy without giving in to the deep freeze.
Replace Your Thermostat:
It may seem daunting to replace your old thermostat, but a programmable “smart” thermostat can cost as little as $50.00 and can save you a bundle on your heating costs. If you invest in one of these handy devices, you can program it to turn your heating down during the day while you’re at work, while you are sleeping, or if you are out for the night or away for the weekend. Some of the higher-end thermostats, like the Nest, can actually be controlled from your smartphone, so if you have gone out for the night and forgotten to program it, you can easily turn the heating down remotely. No wonder they’re called smart thermostats!
Bundle Up:
A very low-cost way to stay warm in the home is to put on extra layers or using extra blankets. Many of us are guilty of dressing in t-shirts or tank tops around the house and cranking the heat, but this can become very costly! Put on your coziest sweater and your warmest socks and slippers, and watch your heating costs drop!
Turn Off Bathroom Fans and Hood Fans:
True, both of these suck up unpleasant smells, but they also suck up heat, so use them sparingly!
Here Comes the Sun:
The sun streaming through an uncovered window is a great free way to bring some much-needed heat into your home. Open curtains and shades on south-facing windows during daylight hours to allow the sun’s heat to enter your house and warm it. Keep curtains and blinds closed at night and when the sun is not shining on them to insulate your house and keep the heat inside.
Change Air Filters:
Clean air filters allow a better flow of air through your heating system, which allows hot air to move more easily through the vents and into rooms. And bonus – the cleaner and healthier air can help with allergies or respiratory issues!
